Message The Nissan engineers were obviously pretty conservative on many things with the engineering that went into the powertrain. The fact that stock short blocks have produced over 740 rwhp is a good testament to that. Digging into the very beefy stock rear diff using a 230mm ring gear is also a great example of where they went overboard with regards to factors of safety.

Nissan also did a lot to work with NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) issues to make the Z32 quieter and smoother. Hence the reason we have silicone impregnated engine mounts and subframe bushings, and the TT's have a 2-piece DS with a rubber center bearing. There are plenty of vibrations produced by the engine which aren't of the intensity and aren't as damaging as the 4th order harmonic. A balancer on the crankshaft will help to dampen the 3rd order and lower vibration components as well, which will help to keep the engine smoother. So I think they may have done it for both reasons (small extra margin of safety + smoothness).
